When they ran out of wine at the wedding in Cana, which would have completely humiliated the bride and groom, Jesus’ mother, Mary, immediately went to Jesus for help. Despite the fact that He had not yet performed His first miracle, Mary knew Jesus and knew somehow, someway, He’d bring good out of this situation. After telling Jesus about the problem, Mary directed the servants to Jesus saying, “Do whatever He tells you.” (John 2:5) What a great motto to live by and a testimony to the trustworthiness and faithfulness of Jesus. The same is true today. If we do whatever He tells us, and we have a whole Bible full of instruction, we will always be blessed--even if we don’t see how our obedience will make a difference.
The servants must have know Jesus enough to trust that if they filled the pitchers with water, and then served a cup of it to the master of the banquet, some blessing would inevitably come out of it. (John 2:6-8) If they didn’t trust Jesus they would have been hesitant to fill the pitchers with water and terrified to then serve it to the master of the banquet. They may have even taken matters into their own hands, ignoring Jesus’ instructions, and tried to get their hands on more wine to the best of their ability. Instead, the servants did just as Jesus said, trusting Jesus to bring good out of their obedience. (John 2:7-9) Not only was Jesus faithful to create a fresh supply of wine, sparing the bride and groom public humiliation, but when the master of the banquet tasted the wine he told the groom, “Everyone brings out the choice wine first and then the cheaper wine after the guests have had too much to drink; but you have saved the best till now." (John 2:10)
What are you wrestling with this week? What does God say, the Bible, He wants you to do? “Do whatever He tells you.” (John 2:5) and watch the amazing blessings He brings out of your obedience.
