Dwight L Moody once said, “The Bible will keep you from sin, or sin will keep you from the Bible.” Isn’t it ironic that when we need to be in the Word the most, often times that is when we are in the Word the least? If we don’t get to anything else on our to-do list, may we always make time to be in the Word. Whenever, I try to do something I know I ought to do, I am encouraged and challenged by this truth “If you really want something you’ll find a way, if not you’ll find an excuse.” In other words, if I really want to be in the Word I’ll find a way. I’ll make time. It will be my highest priority. I won’t let other things come before it, or cut my time short. However, if I am waiting to find time to be in the Word I’m going to be waiting a long time because I will have a list of excuses why I wasn’t able to get to it today.
My motto has always been: If I’m too busy to be in the Word, I’m just too busy. Should that ever happen, my priorities then need to change. The word priority means preference. That which I prefer I will always make time for. I can say I love God’s Word all I want, but how much time I spend in it will be a reflection of how highly I esteem it.
The blessed man of Psalm 1 meditated on God’s Word day and night. Though I’ve always admired him and wished I could do the same, I can’t deny the fact that he had 24 hours in his day as I do mine—and without any of the modern connivance's that I enjoy) That encourages me that being in God’s Word day and night can be done. I love doing this by meditating on scripture because it can be done simply by rehearsing a Bible verse in my head. Try meditating on this promise from Psalm 119 “Great peace have they who love your law, and nothing can make them stumble.” (Psalm 119:165) I imagine this is what the blessed man of Psalm 1 did in order to meditate on God’s Word day and night while staying up on the obligations in his life.
God bless you richly as you seek to conquer the time factor and spend more time in God’s Word.
